Interior Architecture and Design BA (Hons)

Overview and Rankings

A Deep Dive Into interior architecture and design

Combining academic knowledge with practical experience to prepare graduates for a wide range of interior architecture careers.

Interior Architecture and Design explores the relationship between users and spaces — whether those users are human or animal — teaching students to produce creative spatial solutions that respond to real needs across different scenarios.

Established in the School of Art and Design in 2012, the course has built a global reputation as a forward-looking, innovative programme, with a strong focus on design through making, sustainability and an internationalised curriculum.

Students work within a “vertical studio” model, where teaching spans all levels and projects simultaneously, developing critical thinking, spatial intelligence and technical competency through lectures, live industry briefs, workshops and charrettes — using both analogue and digital tools across 2D, 3D, CAD, video and VR.

Study Themes

What You’ll Learn

You will master the following topics during your study at this programme journey.

Our successful graduates will be confident, spatially intelligent designers who can demonstrate a range of individual, collaborative and professional skills and attributes.

Interior Architecture and Design students develop expertise across universal design processes, 3D modelling and CAD, professional studio practice, and critical design inquiry, learning to research, test and refine spatial solutions within ethical, technical and environmental contexts.

Graduates will exhibit strong intercultural literacy and a global design outlook, the flexibility to adapt across a range of design and creative career paths, and the technical and creative confidence to operate professionally in fast-changing design contexts.

  • Interior Design Exploration

Engage in universal design processes as practiced throughout the international design community and develop work using key illustrative and modelling submission methods.
  • Professional Studies

Undertake autonomous activity in making, drawing, collecting, organizing and developing images and other key personal ‘triggers of interest’ in a sketchbook that acts as a log of your work. The sketchbook is intended to be a constant companion and provide a place to note, draw and explore all aspects of design activity taught on the course or initiated in other ways.
  • 3D Modelling

Explore 3D spatial attributes by using surface modelling CAD software, 2D drawings and physical models.
  • Design Inquiry

Critically appraise and focus your own practice and demonstrate your capability to undertake an investigative activity that illustrates the basis for research and key knowledge that underpins the work of design practitioners in their field.

Credits/National Hours
  • What is credit/national hour?

A credit/notional hour is the formal name for the estimated hours that are expected that a student would need to complete a module

  • How many hours is 1 credit?

1 credit is equal to 10 notional hours, so 20 credits are equal to 200 notional hours, The 200 hours includes time in lectures, tutorials, preparing for your lectures, assessments as well as your own personal revision and studying that you would do

  • Can study hours exceed the estimate?

In reality, you might actually go above and beyond the expected notional hours, in particular if your degree requires a lot of independent learning you would most likely exceed the predicted hours

  • How many credits are in a UK semester?

In the UK system each semester is 60 credits worth which is equivalent to at least 600 hours of study in one term. This is approximately equivalent to 8 hours of study a day
